How to Frost a Cake

Made with just eggs, milk, sugar and flour, this four-ingredient cake is quick and easy to put together. And thanks to the surprising cake layers produced, it’s ideal for any occasion, whether you need a quick treat at home, or you’re bringing dessert to a summer potluck. Baked flourless cake includes baked cheesecakes, flourless chocolate cakes, or any other form of cake that is baked without flour. Flourless chocolate cake is a variation of the foam cake. These cakes are usually very rich because of the chocolate, egg yolk, and fat it contains. Decide what size cake you’d like to make and get out the number of pans you’ll need.

In a small saucepan, bring cola to a boil; cook minutes or until liquid is reduced to 1/2 cup. Stir in butter and cocoa until butter is melted; remove from heat. You do not have to do a crumb coat, but if you want a crumb-free finish, this layer of thin frosting is vital. To be doubly sure there won’t be any crumbs, you can do two layers. Be sure to chill the cake between layers, and chill it again before putting the final coat on. Chilling the crumb coat helps it to set so that you won’t risk picking up any pesky bits of cake.

Red Velvet Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting

Creaming the butter and sugar will aerate the batter and make the cake light and fluffy. Add 3 room-temperature eggs one at a time and continue to beat the batter until it’s smooth and creamy.

Put the first layer down on a cake board and spread on a layer of frosting or filling on top. Repeat this process for all your layers of cake. Spread a very thin layer of frosting over the top and sides of the complete stack to catch any crumbs, then chill the cake for 30 minutes to set the frosting.
